HI Sustainability Primer
The recently published Hawai’i Sustainability Primer cuts through the confusion surrounding the term “sustainability” and offers a practical framework for organizations looking for help with environmental, social, and financial sustainability needs.
The 25-page, full color guidebook features local success stories such as: Hamakua Springs Country Farm, Kanu o Ka 'Aina New Century Public Charter School, Volcano Island Honey Company, and Hawai'i Preparatory Academy's Energy Lab.
The primer presents The Natural Step (TNS) Framework, the most universally adopted methodology for strategically responding to global and local sustainability challenges.
Developed by The Natural Step Canada and edited for a Hawaii audience by the Hawaii County Resource Center and The Kohala Center, the primer explains:
- the science of sustainability;
- the indigenous wisdom of the Hawaiian ahupua'a system;
- the root causes of unsustainbility;
- principles for a sustainable society;
- how to plan, make decisions, and take holistic action for sustainability.

The Natural Step Framework was officially adopted as the guiding 'Sustainability Principles' through Resolution 249 by the Hawaii County Council on November 4, 2009. Through the adoption of the Sustainability Resolution, Hawaii County joins a global 'Eco-Municipality' movement.
